Conference Theme:  Building Strategic Alliances Towards Sustainable Tourism Development,
                               Peace and Reconciliation on the African Continent

Conference Goals:
  • Develop public and government appreciation of the central role of tourism in sustainable wealth creation, cultural enrichment, and preservation of biodiversity on the African Continent;
  • Enhance international public appreciation of Africa’s positive attributes including its rich mosaic of peoples, cultures, and biodiversity;
  • Identify and develop strategies for expanding market opportunities in Asia, Europe, North America, and domestic markets, and continue building “Bridges of Tourism, Friendship and Collaboration” between Africa and other regions of the world;
  • Encourage and facilitate collaborative public – private sector – donor – NGO and civil society strategies for new product development; and
  • Foster initiatives that contribute to reconciliation, peace and sustainable wealth creation in regions that have experienced conflict.

IIPT is currently accepting Proposals for exemplary “Success Stories” and
“Models of Best Practice” for special sessions of the Conference.  For more information, review our Call for Proposals.
GENERAL CONFERENCE  ●  Monday-Friday, 21-25 May 2007                                                
Plenary Sessions: Travel and Tourism Industry leaders will be selected and specially invited to address delegates as Keynote Speakers.
Concurrent Sessions: ‘Success Stories’ and ‘Models of Best Practice’ will be presented by leading professionals and practitioners followed by open discussion. We especially welcome contributions from persons directing and managing innovative projects incorporating the power of travel and tourism.
Host day: Experience first hand the welcoming spirit of the people of Uganda and unique destinations of the ‘Pearl of Africa’. Program organized by Uganda Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry.
Participants: The Conference will bring together Ministers of Tourism and senior executives from both the public and private sectors of tourism, NGOs, and donor agencies, as well as educators, policy analysts, leading practitioners, entrepreneurs, future leaders of the industry, and senior representatives of related sectors including environment, culture and economic development.
Foundations: The 4th IIPT African Conference builds on the foundations of three previous IIPT African Conferences: Lusaka, Zambia (2005); Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (2003); and Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa (2002); as well as three Global Summits on Peace through Tourism; Pattaya, Thailand (2005); Geneva, Switzerland (2003); and Amman, Jordan (2000).
SPECIAL ONE DAY FORUMS  ●  Sunday, 20 May 2007                                                          

Educators Forum:

 The aim of this full day scholarly symposium specifically for educators will be to share knowledge, experience, and ideas for future curricula development and educational initiatives that contribute to the role of tourism in sustainable development, peace, reconciliation, poverty reduction and the above indicated topics.

Student/Youth Leadership Forum:

Future Leaders of the travel and tourism industry are invited to take part in the Forum. Active participation for those 29 and under will be heavily subsidized by a low registration rate. The special one day program will address youth aspirations and interests in the industry.

Traditional Leaders Forum:

 Traditional leaders play a critical role across Africa, and are particularly important to ensuring sustainable and collaborative management of tourism resources. This Forum, being held for the first time, aims to examine roles, guiding principles and recommendations for indigenous tourism.

4th IIPT African Conference is being organized in partnership with the Africa Travel Association.

Photo © Pattaya News		 It will seek to bring a broader awareness to the social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits of tourism; identify new markets; facilitate product development and investment opportunities; and contribute to reconciliation, peace and wealth creation/poverty reduction on the African continent.

Uganda Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry Hon. Daudi Migereko said, “The 4th IIPT African Conference will provide Uganda the opportunity to establish further partnerships and strategic alliances in our continuing aim to reach new markets, develop new products, and enhance global awareness of Uganda’s uniqueness as a destination in tandem with our recently launched promotional campaign “Uganda – Gifted By Nature.”
