London, November 15, 2001 – Sir Ian Prosser, Chairman, Six Continents Hotels and Chairman, World Travel and Tourism Council, was the keynote speaker at the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism (IIPT)’s presentation: “Peace Through Tourism: Road to the Second Global Summit 2002,” on Opening Day of the World Travel Market (WTM), Earls Court London, Central Feature Area. WTM was again the platform for announcement of the Second Global Summit on Peace though Tourism to be held October 13 -16, 2002, at the UN Conference Centre, Geneva, Switzerland.

The Summit, organized by the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT), is in support of the UN Decade of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. Louis D'Amore, IIPT Founder and President, made the announcement and talked about IIPT's objectives leading up to the Summit in response to the tragic events of September 11.

Sir Ian Prosser's personal presence in his role as WTTC Chairman, together with WTTC President, Jean-Claude Baumgarten, World Tourism Organization (WTO) Secretary General, Francesco Frangialli, and other leaders from the international travel industry, was a demonstration of solidarity that the global travel and tourism industry stands united and more committed than ever in "Building a Culture of Peace through Tourism" through its vital contribution to job creation, the global economy, promoting mutual understanding among people, and cooperation among nations.

Other speakers addressed the outcomes of the Amman Global Summit and their special relevance to the travel industry today: H.E. Dr. Taleb Rifai, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities and Minister of Information, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and Michael Stolowitzky, Director, International Business Development, American Express and Vice Chairman, MEMTTA Americas (Middle East Mediterranean Travel and Tourism Association).

Achievements of the Amman Summit include the Amman Declaration, endorsed by tourism leaders from more than 50 countries, and incorporated as an official U.N. Document; launching of a Coalition of Partners for World Peace through Tourism, with more than 20 founding members - each committed to a Millennium Project that contributes to the vision of Tourism as a Global Peace Industry; five international networks and Chapters in the Caribbean and Australia.

On the last day of the Summit, on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month, of the first year of the new century, the IIPT launched a Global Peace Parks Project from Bethany Beyond the Jordan, site of Christ's baptism.  Goal of the Project is 2,000 Peace Parks circling the Earth in this U.N. Decade of Peace.

Reed Travel Exhibitions and World Travel Market continue their leadership role in IIPT's Peace through Tourism initiatives as Silver Sponsors of the Second Global Summit.

IIPT  also convened a meeting of its 20 founding members of the Coalition of Partners for World Peace Through Tourism at WTM.

IIPT was established in 1986 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering and facilitating tourism initiatives that contribute to international understanding and cooperation, improved quality of environment, preservation of heritage, and a peaceful, sustainable world.
